The Canadian Disability Tax Credit, as defined by the CRA, is a non-refundable tax credit that reduces income tax payable for Canadians living with a severe and prolonged impairment. The DTC covers people from a wide array of both physical & mental disabilities, providing stability & security from additional, unavoidable disability costs. The Disability Tax Credit can be misleading, as many Canadians who may not see themselves as disabled are eligible for this disability benefit. An example is someone dealing with Crohn’s, IBS, diabetes, ADHD, or depression.
To receive the Disability Tax Credit, the person’s Disability Tax Certificate, or Form T2201, in addition to the usual follow up forms that CRA will send, must be completed, and then approved by the CRA. A medical practitioner must validate that the person has severe and prolonged impairment, describing the effects, too.
